Bathroom Lighting

In looking into bathroom lighting we thought we'd go with a ceiling light and a light over the vanity as well. We opted out of a fan for the ceiling light because the ducting isn't there and installing all of that would be really tiring. I know, we're really lazy (especially considering we're renovating the whole house), but we figured that because we've got a window right next to the shower we'll see how it goes.

Our bathroom is pretty small (8x7) and the ceiling light is located pretty close to the wall that the vanity will be on, making it difficult to squeeze in a ceiling light and a vanity light

(this picture looks a little weird, but the wall that the sink will be on is the left, so you can see how close that center light is to it)

Because we thought the wall and room would look too crowded, we nixed the idea of a center light and vanity light. But, with such a small bathroom and a small window, we were afraid that the room would look too dark and thus make it seem even more cramped and small.

Then we looked for a center light that used 3-5 lightbulbs, but all the ones we found were pretty big, so that idea was nixed as well because we didn't want one light to completely take over the whole room.

Again, back to the drawing board.

Then Chris came up with a great idea

We got mini can lights! (and we made sure that these are okay to be used in wet environments)

With two can lights towards the back of the room, that freed us up for getting any kind of light we wanted. We decided a flush-mount would be the most practical

With the lighting situation figured out, we just had to figure out where to place the can lights.

We knew that with the ceiling light so close to the vanity wall we wanted to place the can lights toward the back of the room, we just had to figure out how far away from the walls to make them. So I got out the tape measure and sharpie and measured away

(can you see those small sharpie dots???)

Normally I like things completely symmetrical, so I wanted the can lights equal distance from the back wall, and equal distance from the side walls. But after putting all the marks on the ceiling Chris convinced me that these two can lights didn't have to be PERFECT. We decided that one would be placed over the shower area and the other placed over the little shelving unit we'll be putting in the corner (the shower one is about 30" from its side wall and the shelving one is about 20" from its side wall, I know, it was a lot for me to handle).

Once we got the placement figured out we chipped away the plaster, cut out the lathe, and dropped the can lights in

It's looking good, and hopefully well lit!
