An Attic Improvement

As with most old houses our home has no insulation. We're lucky that because of the way our house has been built the front, more communal spaces, stay cool throughout the day because they don't get beaten by the sunlight. The back of the house get bathed in sunlight alllllllll day long. Which is great, we love the sunshine and so do the veggies, but the back of the interior of the house, including our bedroom, stay very warm.

As we've worked on rooms we've put insulation in, which has greatly improved things. However, the huge expanse of an empty attic stays very very very very hot once the warm weather months come. Which is right upon us. With the attic very warm, in the evenings the heat travels down and makes our house much warmer. Boo.

The attic has an old fan installed against the venting to blow out hot air. Of course because the house is so old it doesn't work

So we took it down...

...and we got a new one online for a great price that automatically turns on when the room it's in reaches a certain temperature

In order to mount the new fan we had to block all the shuttered venting except the area that would blow out the warm air

Once the blocking was up it was time to install the fan

After the fan was installed it was time to get it wired...

...and once we were there we figured we might as well install some more lighting in the attic to make finding things in our storage area a bit easier

And yesterday when I got home from work at the A's Chris had gotten everything all wired and looking bea-UTI-ful

Fan in, lights in, looks great!

Chris set the fan to go on when the attic reaches 85 degrees. We'll see what happens when things start to get warmer (not this week though, rain is forcasted allllll week :( boooo). But once it gets hot hopefully that fan kicks in and helps keep things a bit cooler. We shall report back!
