First up – we rarely do product review posts, and I know some people really don’t enjoy them, which I can totally understand. I usually do not like sponsored posts myself, so I wanted to make sure if I was reviewing a product I was completely honest with myself and you guys.
About 2 months ago I got an email from someone at Mohawk rug offering us a free rug in exchange for a review of the product on the website. Up until this point we really haven’t accepted many things for free because I’m not interested in writing reviews for things that don’t feel authentic and that we don’t really need. But, let’s be completely honest: rugs are costly and Chris’ office still doesn’t have one. So I accepted.
She sent me the links of rugs that I could choose from and I clicked around looking for some that would eventually work for Chris’ office. The one gripe I had right off the bat is that their rugs were a lot more traditional than I usually prefer. While this home is traditional, I usually like to pick more contemporary accessories, and rugs are one of those things that I usually tend to sway on the more bright, colorful and geometric side. They didn’t have the greatest selection of those items, but still a fairly decent amount.
Chris’ office will eventually be painted yellow, so I wanted something that would go with that. I found this one

I wasn’t super thrilled about the synthetic material. But honestly, our two wool rugs in the front room and TV room have been shedding for 2+ years and making fur bunnies throughout our entire house and getting all over our clothes and Zoe whenever we play on them, so I wasn’t too disappointed. But, a big plus was that it was made in the USA (Chris and I try to buy USA made products), so we went with it.
I sent along the link to the one we liked, told her what size and waited only a few days for it to arrive in the mail. Once it came I decided to roll it out in the front room for it to flatten out
That was about 6 weeks ago. I didn’t want to write a review of it without actually using it for a decent amount of time to give an honest opinion of what I thought of it. And I left it in the front room on top of the wool rug during that time because I figured it would get the most use there because we play with Zoe there a lot
So, here’s what I thought:
When we first got the rug I was disappointed upon opening it by the colors. I know that it always says: “The digital images we display have the most accurate color possible. However, due to differences in computer monitors, we cannot be responsible for variations in color between the actual product and your screen. Please be advised that in some cases patterns and colors may vary according to size.”, and this one said that too. But, it looked WAY more dirty gray on my screen, and was actually sort of brown in real life, so that was a bit of a bummer. Of course, every computer makes it look different, but I definitely thought, “Huh,” when I first opened it.
As for how we like the rug? Well, I actually really love it. I haven’t liked synthetic rugs in the past because they can feel scratchy or cheap, but this actually feels really nice. I love wool rugs because they feel plush and thick, and this one feels nice enough to roll around on, which is good because we do that a lot on it
I actually find the wool rug to be really tough on my skin and too scratchy, and so I usually have on a sweater when I play with Zoe on it (I have really sensitive skin), but this one doesn’t feel bad on my skin, which – as a person with very sensitive skin – I super appreciate. Also, THERE ARE NO FUZZ BUNNIES! I cannot tell you how annoyed I get with the fucking wool fuzz bunnies that are just all over the fucking house despite sweeping and vacuuming from our wool rugs. So I am very thankful to not have another rug that is contributing to the forest of fur around our house.
Another thing is that it cleans up nicely too. Zoe has spit up on it, dropped food, spilled her water, etc. and I don’t have to scream and rush to get a towel like I do on the wool ones. So that is super appreciated as well. In fact, I appreciated that so much I actually moved it into the TV room and moved the wool rug into Chris’ office
I do love the wool rug in the TV room for it’s colors, but Zoe loves to stand at the coffee table and eat her food and she drops crap everywhere (who would have thought, a messy baby?) I didn’t want to ruin the wool rug, and this one cleans up so easily (there have already been many beans squished into it and cleaned up), so it seemed to make a lot more sense
And of course, what would a product review be without a giveaway, right? Mohawk Home is giving away a rug up to 5′ x 8′ and under $150 to one of you readers (you can find some of their rugs here, here, here, here, here, and here). To enter the giveaway please leave a comment in this post (one comment per entrant please). You can also like them on Facebook, or follow them on Pinterest or Twitter and use #ilovemymohawkrug (they do other giveaways as well, so it’s worth a follow to see if you can enter another giveaway). I’ll pick a winner using Random.org in one week on next Wednesday’s post (3/19).
*Of course, all of these opinions are my own and although Mohawk did send us our rug for free, they didn’t tell me what to write, damnit. I actually debated for a while whether or not I would accept the rug to write a review, and while I finally decided to, please know that I strive to be completely honest and I hope you respect my opinion to have written this post. There were some things I didn’t like as much as others, and I made sure to share that with you. Mohawk was generous enough to send us a rug, and I wanted to do the review justice.

Thank you for the honest review. I like that you don't have many reviews but trust you to be honest when you do review something! I noticed the color difference before I read what you wrote about it so that's disappointing. Still, an easy to clean rug would be great for our living room!

Honest reviews are the best. Entering the giveaway since I'm a sucker for rugs!
Cheryl Brodzinsky says
This is one of the most honest reviews I've read in a while, and I appreciate that! Rugs are great, and winning a free one would be amazing because they are so pricey!

Thanks for the great review!

I've have followed your blog for a long time now and have always found you and Chris to very upfront, tell-it-like-it-is, people. I would definitely buy from Mohawk given the excellent review you provided. I particularly liked the fact that you focused on its wearability in day-to-day situations. Having a chance to select one for our home would be fantastic! Thanks.

Glad to hear your thoughts about the pros/cons of a synthetic rug! Something I've been mulling over lately as we gear up to buy 3(!) large area rugs for our new house.
Nancy L. Vance says
Thanks for the review! I too, am a sensitive skin gal, and would love to win one of these rugs!!
Katie says
Love your rug review! I've been pondering a wool rug as well and had the same concerns about the fuzz and softness. Sounds like a synthetic one may be the way I want to go!
Kelly says
Thanks for the review, and the giveaway!

Free rug, yes please! Thanks for the review!

I love that you moved the rug!! As you were describing the positive attributes, I was thinking darn it sure would go better… and boom, you had moved it!! The other rug will look great w/yellow walls too! Win-win, I say!!
Jan says
I love rugs but I always steered clear of synthetics. I think I might give one a try when it comes time to buy one for the foyer, living room, and kitchen.
Rita Strong says
Thank you for this review! I have been looking for a new rug but with 2 cats and a dog I really need one that is easy to clean!
Luisa says
Free rug? Count me in, please! Great review [and of course the cutest baby ever]. I've followed your blog long enough to know how forthright you are — and I sure could use a good, not to mention good looking, rug here in the new place with these bare floors.
Kevin says
Gotta agree that the color does stand out as being quite a bit different, but that being said, it's not bad.
And you've potentially swayed me to try a synthetic rug this go around, since I have similar issues with our wool ones.
margaretedith says
You did a really great job of reviewing honestly. I found this post to be totally genuine and not at all intrusive or annoying. Thank you!
I agree, it looked like a neutral gray online and that your pictures, especially in contrast to the black and white rug you already had, show it looking pretty brown. But still nice.

Rugs are my #1 decorating weakness, it would be great to get a free one. 🙂

Of course I am entering. Who doesn't need another rug? Im plum out right now and my the new house is almost double the size of the old one.
Peggy says
Yes, I am entering too! Who needs another rug? Me! (Can you see me way out here holding my hand held way high up politely waiting to be recognized?) Since I tore out the wall to wall and refinished the original hardwood floors my house echo's. Love the floors, but geez the sound echoing is annoying. Just purchased a wool area rug for TV room and I do Love it, but did not realize that I would get fuzz balls. So yes indeed I would love to try a synthetic Made in America rug. By the way, it's so refreshing to see the way you and Chris put such attention to detail in your house. Nice, real nice!
Peter says
Good review. All of the synthetic rugs I see in the store are thin and cheap feeling so this would be a nice change.
Beth P says
Thanks for the review: good (reasonably priced) rugs can be so hard to find!
Lora says
Great review, thank-you!!
Deb says
Great review – I hate buying rugs sight unseen because of the comfort and color factor but I DESPERATELY need a few rugs, so it's nice to have company that I can go to based on someone's review. And if they used those photos of Zoe standing there with her cute little toes digging into their rugs and that big cheesy baby smile on her face they sure would sell a lot more! 😉

Personally, I like reviews, just as long as they're not EVERY.SINGLE.POST. 🙂

very good review! Enjoyed hearing how well this rug held up with a small child in the home and of course pets, since my grandsons come to visit (and spill things) often. And the pets…well, they're part of the family. I've never tried their rugs, but would certainly love to! Have a great week!
