Meryl Cuts Tile. Chris Lays Tile. Repeat

February 6, 2013

After Chris had a small redo of tiling on Day 1, it was smooth sailing, so this weekend we were looking forward to getting a decent amount done despite the fact that we’d be stopping early on Sunday for the Super Bowl. Here’s where things were after day 1

It wasn’t a ton, but it was enough to get an idea of just how awesome it was going to be 🙂
So on Saturday Chris started completing the wall on the left. First he made a level line so he could make sure the line of tiles got extended on the right line with the rest, and then he got started spreading out the thinset

When we tiled our main bathroom it went pretty slow and Chris and I were both really involved in the tiling process (and I learned a lot). Because the tiles were glass I back buttered all of them before they went on (so there were no visible bubbles or anything on the back), I prepped the wall ahead of him by spreading out the thinset, and I cut all the tiles. The glass tiles were completely flat so Chris had to spend a decent amount of time with every single tile making sure they were all level, on the same plane and not puckering out from the wall too much because there was very little room for error. On the other hand, the beveled subway tile is so much easier to deal with, and as a result I help Chris by doing some prep work (getting all the tiles out of the box and lined up and ready) but mostly I’m just the official cutter, and because there aren’t too many cuts, that frees me up to do other things around the house (like FINALLY getting the cubby all painted, painting 3 coats on the pocket door, patch and paint in Cashew’s room, etc.) So mostly I got to hang out with Chris while painting in there, but not actually tile myself, hehehehe

Once Chris got up to the window he put up the tile on the edges, but then held up the apron to make sure that it would cover up the gap across the rest of the span

Luckily the apron is tall enough that we’d only have to have the piece of tile up on the edge, but then not have to tile the rest. Hooray for laziness! 🙂

Then Chris moved on to tiling up the shower

After another hour or so he ended the day here

Looking snazzy! And as you can see, there weren’t too many cuts. And what’s even better is because the wall is square Chris gave me the measurement for the smaller and bigger pieces that butted up against the wall and window trim and I set up a fence on the tile saw and just ripped several down at once to the correct size. Easy peasy. And the cuts around the sill look pretty awesome

On Sunday after we completed some other small tasks Chris spent about 2 hours finishing up the shower wall

The tile goes up 5 ft up on all the walls in the bathroom but all the way to the ceiling in the shower so after it got up 5 ft next to the window we had to figure out at what point to cut in and make it more narrow as it went up to the ceiling. Chris made a line, and again because the wall was square we measured the size of the smaller and bigger tile, I set up a fence and cut a few down

As we got closer to the ceiling we realized that there would be a small sliver as that last piece, which kinda sucked but we’ve got a full piece against the shower floor and nearly a full piece along the rest of the bathroom floor and it butts up against the window without a sliver of a piece, so if this is where the small piece ends up, it’s not a huge deal

And at the end of the work day this is what the wall looked like

Bah! It looks so good!!! And while that tiny sliver at the ceiling is still slightly annoying, I find that I don’t actually notice it much because I’m so transfixed by the rest of it, heehehe 🙂 Ahhhhh

It looks damn marvelous 🙂

The small sliver of a row at the very top of the shower looks like a finishing tile to me as in it was supposed to be there… Looks fantastic!

I agree – the top tile is almost like a trim piece that looks like it's totally done on purpose!

Then it was totally on purpose 😉

Oh, hello there. We're Chris and Meryl and we're renovating home in Oakland, CA. Chris is the handy, knowledgeable builder and I'm his slightly inappropriate assistant. We've got 2 helpers - Zoe is 2 and Merritt arrived in June of 2015. Spurred by our love of renovating our own home we started a handyman, design and organizing business and now that we're both self employed we're busier than ever, but we love it!
